Yeah! It’s that time! My Canon EOS Kiss X4 / Rebel T2i / 550D grand unboxing!

So here’s a quick unboxing and a few test pics. I am working on some more serious tests this week and will have them up soon. So far I’m very pleased! Some of the photos are a td blurry as I was a bit to excited. Enjoy.

My first feeling was how light it was. Except maybe the Pentax K-x, I don’t remember any of the DSLRs that I looked into and tried being this light. Even the Panasonic GF-1 felt heavier with that pancake lens. This is fine, as it makes it easier to carry it with me everywhere (I got one of those Kata photo backpacks) and I use a monopod all the time anyway. The manual is in Japanese, but I had already downloaded and had been reading the English version. I haven’t thought about how I would register it, as I’d have to get some help reading and writing the Japanese. Overall it feels really robust. The 18-55mm lens seems like a good start, but I really, really want a good zoom lens. I’m going to have to wait and decided what I’ll get next, because I’d still like to get a battery grip and a few more things.

Since I got the camera the weather has been pretty crappy, but I did manage to take some test shots. In another post I’ll have some more test with downloadable raws for your viewing and scrutinizing pleasure. Until then, be sure to check my Flickr for up to the minute uploads.

Down the street from me is a crazy car dealership that has a beautiful Nissan GT-R. I had to stop by and take a few pics.

The also had a large shoe, er… a Daihatsu Copen.

Then I just walked around a bit so I wouldn’t just have pictures of cars.

Yeah, I’ll have more later. On another important note, I’ve become a huge fan of Adobe Lightroom. As an advanced Photoshop user I still get a bit frustrated with some of it’s limitations, but for quick photo editing it’s really great.

New stuff will continue to flow! Videos soon! I also have some other editing and updating to do to this blog and some non-camera related posts to make….

    Here are a few observations from using Canon EOS Rebel T2i for the past 2 days:

    * RAW files from this camera not supported in OS X yet
    * MOV files created will test your computers speed
    * MOV files in 1080p will eat up ~330MB/min and use ~15mbit/s bitrate
    * Good starter lens, but I can already tell I’ll want something to supplement it
    * Great fit and finish
    * Very light

    Budi: Yeah, I want a new lens too. A Zoom for photo and a better all-around lens and for video I have my eye on the Tamron AF 17-50mm F/2.8 SP XR Di II VC. It will most likely be my next purchase.

    I’ve had no problem shooting 1080p so far. I have a 16 GB SD card and a few 8 GB cards for backup. All I really want now is the battery grip…

    I have been editing on a macbook pro with 2 GB of RAM in Final Cut Pro with little problems. Only the final render takes a bit, but all of the straight editing is a breeze.

    Hey I want to order on to these cams I want to save a few bucks and get the Japanese Import but the jury is still out on if you can change the menu to English. It sounds like you have the Jap/import…if so can you put this to bed? Can you change the menu from Japanese to English?

    Thanks

    Film guy: Yep! All the controls are in English and all of the menus can be converted to English. Just download the PDF of the User Guide so you know where the language setting is in the menu.

    Th on;y difference between my camera and the USA/European model is the name.

    Now, on importing from Japan… watch out for import duties. They can sometimes balance out the deal and sometimes even cost more after shipping.

    Good luck!

    i purchased the kiss x4 on ebay, but i live in ausrtalia. what plug does the wall charger use? if it isnt an australian plug which im guessing it isn’t, what typ of plug converter do i need to get?

    Karl: It’s the same in Japan as it is in the USA, you need the adapter. The charger is set to work on 100-240 volts (look on the back) so you should be set.

    Hope that helps!

    In the video section of the Kiss X4 menu do you still have options of selecting recording in PAL or NTSC?

    How do you find the feel of the external casing since its not magnesium/metal and plastic. Does it still “feel” strong?

    One difference between the 550D and Kiss X4:

    The Kiss X4 can only switch the UI between Japanese and English.
    The 550D has a much wider language selection (~20 languages).
